A Victorian terraced house in Wandsworth with beautiful original pine floorboards — and a gap in the floor where an old concrete hearth had been taken out.
Decades of wear had left many boards split, damaged or missing altogether. Around the fireplace, the removed hearth left a hole that new boards had to be stitched into before any sanding could begin.
The trickiest part
Matching the width, grain and colour of the surrounding boards is what makes a repair like this invisible. New floorboards were stitched in around the old hearth to close the gap seamlessly, and damaged or missing boards elsewhere were replaced with matching reclaimed pine.

Back to bare timber
With the floor sound and level again, the whole area was sanded with belt and edger sanders and finished with a primer coat and hard-wearing coats of commercial lacquer.

The result
A labour-intensive job, but the reward is a beautiful, characterful pine floor with a repair you cannot pick out — one the owners can enjoy for many years to come.
